Direct Thermal (DTL) vs Thermal Transfer (TTL) Labels: Which Do You Need?
Short answer: use direct thermal (DTL) labels, which need no ribbon, for short-life labels like courier parcels, weighing-scale food, and fast-moving stock. Use thermal transfer (TTL) labels, which are printed with a ribbon, for permanent barcodes like product labels and asset tags that must last years. Both come in the same sizes; the difference is how they print and how long the print lasts.

How does direct thermal printing work?
Direct thermal labels have a chemically coated surface that turns black wherever the printer’s hot head touches it. There is no ribbon, ink, or toner, which is why it is the cheapest way to print at volume. How does thermal transfer printing work?
Thermal transfer melts ink from a ribbon onto the label, bonding a permanent image that does not fade with time or heat. It costs more because you buy a ribbon as well as labels, but the barcode lasts for years. Essential for product labeling, inventory, and asset tags. Which should I use? (by application)
- Courier & e-commerce shipping (4x6): direct thermal, the parcel is delivered in days, so you never pay for a ribbon. See DTL 100x150.

A simple rule of thumb
