Wash Care Label Requirements for Garment Exporters
Short answer: export garments need a permanently attached fabric label showing ISO 3758 care symbols (or FTC wording for the US), fiber composition, size, and country of origin, printed so it stays legible for the garment’s life. In practice that means resin ribbon printed on taffeta or satin stock, tested to survive 50+ washes.
What must be on the label?
- Care instructions: the five ISO 3758 symbols. Wash, bleach, dry, iron, professional care, in the correct order. US buyers may require written instructions per FTC care labeling rules instead of or alongside symbols.
- Fiber content: e.g. "100% Cotton" or "65% Polyester 35% Cotton", per the destination market's textile regulation.
- Country of origin: "Made in Pakistan".
- Size, and often the buyer's style/PO reference.
The exact layout comes from your buyer's spec pack. Never improvise symbol order or omit fiber percentages; both are common audit failures.
Which material and ribbon pass buyer QA?
The standard pairing is wash care resin ribbon, a specialised resin ribbon, on nylon or polyester taffeta (25–50mm width), or satin for premium/babywear lines. Wax and wax-resin ribbons fail wash testing, the print lifts within a few cycles. Buyer QA labs typically test to 50 domestic washes including hot cycles and tumble drying; a correct resin-on-taffeta print passes with margin.
Why do shipments fail on care labels?
- Print washes off. Wrong ribbon grade or unmatched ribbon/fabric pairing.
- Wrong or missing symbols. Layout not matching the buyer spec.
- Fraying edges. Straight-cut instead of heat-cut synthetic stock.
- Illegible small text. Fiber content printed below minimum size.
All four are preventable at the label supply stage, which is why exporters in Faisalabad, Sialkot, Karachi, and Lahore buy the ribbon and fabric stock as a matched, test-printed set.
Print in-house or buy printed labels?
If your styles change per order, print in-house on a Zebra/TSC printer with our matched taffeta + resin ribbon rolls. If you run long repeat programs, fully printed and cut labels from the factory are cheaper per unit. Moon Traders supplies both. see wash care label options →
