Thermal Paper Roll Sizes: 57mm vs 80mm, which Fits Your POS?

Short answer: if your receipt is about 3 inches wide (standard shop/restaurant receipt), you need 80mm thermal paper rolls. If it is narrow like a credit-card machine slip, you need 57mm. The width is also printed inside your printer’s roll compartment.

Does GSM matter?

Yes. 48gsm paper is thinner, more meters per roll, lowest cost, fine for high-volume retail. 55gsm is thicker and prints darker with an image life of 2–3 years. Preferred by pharmacies, banks, and anywhere receipts are kept as records. If your receipts fade too fast, moving to 55gsm top-coated paper is the fix.

How to check what your printer takes

1. Open the roll compartment. Width and max diameter are usually molded inside (e.g. "80mm x Ø80mm").
2. Measure the old roll's width with a ruler: ~57mm or ~80mm.
3. Check the printer model: TM-T20/T82, most "3-inch POS printers" = 80mm; card terminals and "2-inch" printers = 57mm.
